Plumbright Southern offers a power flush in Hedge End for heating systems clogged with sludge. If radiators have cold spots, the boiler is noisy or the heating is slow, a power flush can clear the system.
Over time, the steel inside radiators slowly rusts and forms a black sludge. It settles at the bottom of radiators and in pipes, blocking the flow of hot water. Radiators end up cold at the bottom, the boiler has to work harder and parts like the pump and heat exchanger wear out sooner.
More Information
A power flush connects a pump to your heating system and pushes cleaning chemicals through it at high flow. We work through each radiator in turn to loosen and remove the sludge. Then we flush with clean water until it runs clear and add inhibitor to slow new sludge forming.
Look for radiators that are cold at the bottom, dark water when you bleed them, a boiler that bangs or kettles, and heating that takes longer than it should to warm up. A power flush is also a good idea before fitting a new boiler, so dirty water does not damage it.
Plumbright Southern has carried out the power flush in Hedge End homes as part of 25 years in plumbing and heating. A flush on its own helps, but adding a magnetic filter afterwards catches new sludge before it builds up again. As Gas Safe registered engineers, we can also check the boiler while we are there, since sludge often affects its heat exchanger.

A power flush usually takes most of a day for an average house with around ten radiators. Larger systems or very dirty ones take longer. You will not have heating or hot water from the boiler while we work, so it helps to plan the flush for a day that suits you.
If the cold spots are at the bottom of the radiators and caused by sludge, a power flush usually clears them. If a radiator is cold at the top, it probably needs bleeding instead. Cold radiators can also be caused by a faulty valve or pump, which we check first.
Most systems do not need a power flush often. If inhibitor levels are kept up and a magnetic filter is fitted and cleaned at each boiler service, a flushed system can stay clean for many years. A flush is mainly needed when sludge symptoms appear or before a new boiler goes in.
